Stainless Steel Rivets – Riveting Methods & Common Solutions

1. Common Riveting Methods for Stainless Steel Rivets (by Process)

1) Blind Rivet Setting (Most Widely Used in Factories)

  • Applications: Single-side operation, limited space, mass assembly (doors/windows, sheet metal, cabinets)
  • Principle: The rivet gun pulls the mandrel, expanding the rivet body to form a bulge; the mandrel breaks at the groove.
  • Tools: Hand riveter (small batches ≤5mm), pneumatic / electric rivet gun (mass production)
  • Steps: Drilling → Deburring → Insert rivet → Vertical setting → Mandrel breakage → Inspect bulge

2) Solid Rivet Cold Riveting (Traditional Process)

  • Applications: Double-side access, high strength required, diameter ≤8mm
  • Principle: The tail of the rivet is hammered / stamped at room temperature to form a head and fill the hole.
  • Tools: Rivet hammer, pneumatic riveting hammer, hydraulic riveting machine
  • Key points: Support the head with a dolly; the head diameter is about 1.5 times the rivet diameter.

3) Solid Rivet Hot Riveting (High-Strength Connection)

  • Applications: Large diameter (>8mm), heavy-duty structures (bridges, heavy machinery)
  • Principle: Rivet is heated red-hot, inserted into the hole, and quickly headed; cooling shrinkage creates a tight joint.
  • Key points: Strict control of heating temperature, heading speed, and cooling; rarely used in general factories.

4) Rotary Riveting (Radial / Orbital Riveting)

  • Applications: Stainless steel, high-hardness materials, precision / low-damage riveting
  • Principle: Riveting head rotates + axial pressure to gradually deform the rivet tail, with uniform forming and low stress.
  • Parameters: High pressure, low speed (80–120 r/min), holding for 2–3 seconds, carbide riveting head.

5) Push-in Rivets (Quick Assembly)

  • Applications: Quick assembly, temporary / light-duty connections
  • Principle: Two-piece rivet; the small pin is pressed into the large body with interference fit, no or simple tooling required.

3. Common Factory Problems & Solutions

  • Cracked rivets: Small hole / excessive force / overly hard material
    → Enlarge hole, reduce pressure, use softer rivets.
  • Uneven bulge / loose joint: Inclined tool / excessive clearance / insufficient holding time
    → Vertical operation, strict hole size control, extend holding time.
  • Mandrel not breaking: Insufficient pulling force / mismatched nose piece / defective rivets
    → Calibrate tool, replace nose piece, use qualified rivets.
